Medical Assisting

A Pathway Into the Healthcare Community

Medical Assistants (MA) are often the first point of contact for patients. These multi-skilled health professionals perform both administrative and clinical duties to keep the offices of physicians, podiatrists, and other health practitioners running smoothly. Common tasks include taking medical histories and vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examinations, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by a physician.

The crucial role MAs play in population health is reflected by the current high demand and strong job outlook. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 19% from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations (only 4%) and faster than the average for other healthcare support occupations (14%).

6-hour skill boot camps

The Medical Assisting program by OpusVi™ and MercyPLUS consists of 28 major credits total. The program is geared towards helping students pass the Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA) Exam, enhancing their employability, and preparing them for MA practice.

The first skills camp covers basic MA skills like rooming patients, taking vitals, sanitization and sterilization, EKGs, and specialty examinations.  The second skills camp covers venipuncture, injections, lab testing, and wound care.  The students are given procedure sheets for each skill, and I provide a list of skills and supplies to the proctor.  Typically, the sponsoring organization chooses a local clinic and proctor(s) to facilitate the skills camp.
The practicum takes place during the third semester.  CAAHEP requires 160 practicum hours.  The practicum is split into two classes, MA 203 and 204.  The students spend time in different departments of the clinic to practice all MA skills learned in the program.

There are two skills camp days in the second semester.  Each camp is typically six hours.  The students have MA 102 Clinical Procedures I for eight weeks, then MA 122 Clinical Procedures II for seven weeks during the second semester.  Skills camp is typically held the last week of both of those classes.

After earning their credits, students can either graduate with a certificate or they can earn or transfer extra credits to graduate with an associate’s degree. We will counsel each student to determine which of the options is best for their career goals. Visit MercyPLUS’s transfer page to learn more.

Upon graduation, learners will be able to:

  • Perform entry-level medical assisting administrative and clinical skills

  • Apply professionalism and therapeutic communication appropriate to the medical clinic

  • Identify legal and ethical conduct suitable to the medical clinic

  • Effectively participate as an integral part of a healthcare team by assisting providers and promoting positive patient relations

  • Display behaviors consistent with the core values of MercyPLUS

The Medical Assisting program by OpusVi™ and MercyPLUS is a direct admit program. This means that when students are admitted to MercyPLUS, they’re admitted into the Medical Assisting program as well! The application is free of charge. All applicants must:

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalency

  • Be 18 years of age or older

Medical Assisting is an excellent career choice for those wishing to learn the ins and outs of healthcare and clinic operations including primary patient care, billing and coding for clinic reimbursement, and lab work. As such, our entry-level program is great for:

  • Individuals wishing to gain a holistic understanding of healthcare operations

  • People who desire to enter the healthcare workforce (as a career on its own or as a stepping stone to earn a degree in nursing or healthcare administration)

  • Healthcare professionals such as receptionists, certified nurse assistants, or patient care technicians looking for a career change

OpusVi™ and MercyPLUS stand for transparent pricing with no surprise tuition or hidden course fees, distance education fees, tech fees, or more — learners pay a fixed price of $3,572 per semester (a full program cost of $10,716), which allows them to take up to 12 credits. On top of a top-accredited education, the fees also give students access to a suite of student support services including enrollment coaches, personal research coaches, as well as academic and personal counseling.

The only extra costs learners should anticipate are for learning materials (such as textbooks), travel expenses for the skill boot camps and clinicals and a $110 graduation fee.

“This program is a great way to get into the healthcare profession. The job opportunities for MAs are out there, with a projected growth of 19% from 2019 to 2029 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. To put this into perspective, the growth projection is only 4% on average for all occupations. Earning your Medical Assistant (AAMA) Certification is a start to a lifelong profession in healthcare with a lot of room for professional growth. Many MAs are able to employ their holistic knowledge of healthcare operations to eventually manage clinics. Others use their Medical Assisting education as a stepping stone to becoming nurses or enter other areas of healthcare. It’s a fulfilling career and a good way to give back to your community and be part of the solution.”

For example, we employ medical office simulation software so that learners can practice the exact tasks they will do on the job in a safe environment. Additionally, we have strategies in place to build a social learning community throughout the program. FAQ

The Medical Assisting program is a cohort-based curriculum. As a result, students will complete all their coursework together. The courses are designed to be completed part-time with about 10-15 hours needing to be dedicated to your coursework each semester.

This is a hybrid program, that includes both online and in-person learning. The coursework, which makes up the majority of the program, is 100% online. The in-person aspects of the program are two six-hour skill boot camps in quarters two and three. There are also 160 clinical hours, which will allow you to gain practical experience and form connections with potential employers.

This program consists of 28 credits. You will graduate with a certificate or can earn or transfer extra credits to graduate with an associate’s degree. The advantage of having an associate’s degree is that it qualifies you to start one of our two MercyPLUS bachelor degree programs: Healthcare Administration or Public Health. We will counsel you to help you determine which of the options is best for your career goals. You can also visit MercyPLUS’s transfer page to learn more.

We understand that you might be nervous to take online classes and are doing everything we can to support you, both before you enroll and during your studies! Our Enrollment Coaches will help you have a stress-free online learning experience.

You can expect active and adaptive learning through interactive textbooks, multimedia content, online activities, and the use of Medical Office Simulation Software. Social learning is encouraged throughout the program so you can easily engage, share knowledge, and discuss the program content with other learners using our discussion tool. The learning can be completed whenever is convenient for you, meaning you can learn on your own schedule.

This flexible online learning experience is paired with all the necessary practicum experiences you need to become a caring, ethical, and competent healthcare professional.

Medical Assistants perform both administrative and clinical duties to support the work of physicians, physician assistants, and other health practitioners. Responsibilities vary from office to office depending on location, size, and specialty. Common administrative duties include updating and filing patient medical records, coding and filling out insurance forms, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services, and handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping. Clinical duties may include instructing patients about medication and special diets, preparing patients for examination, collecting and preparing laboratory specimens as well as performing basic laboratory tests, drawing blood, and taking electrocardiograms.

Through an excellent curriculum, the use of Medical Office Simulation Software, and extensive practical experience, our Medical Assisting program prepares you to perform both clinical and administrative tasks confidently.

The Medical Assisting program by OpusVi™ and MercyPLUS is a direct admit, entry-level program. This means that the only prerequisites are that you must have a high school diploma or equivalency and be 18 years of age or older.

Working as a Medical Assistant normally requires formal training resulting in a certificate or diploma. While there are several certification options out there, only graduates of medical assisting programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) are eligible to take the CMA (AAMA) Certification Exam. Many employers, as well as insurance agencies that insure physicians, require this certification for reasons of liability. Our program is CAAHEP-accredited and prepares you for the Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA) Exam with pass rates of 100% for past cohorts.

Medical Assisting is a fulfilling career that includes both clinical and administrative tasks. It’s also extremely stable: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for medical assistants are expected to grow by 19% from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. Our program is geared towards kick-starting your path in the medical field. We help you with the job search, give you support when writing your résumé and cover letter, practice interview skills, and give you an opportunity to form professional connections at clinic sites. This has resulted in job placement rates of 100% for past cohorts.

With several years of experience, medical assistants may look into taking on roles that involve more leadership. Due to their intimate knowledge of clinical operations, they are often well-positioned to become clinic managers. They also may consider advancing into other healthcare occupations such as a registered nurse, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner.
